Since its genesis in the 1980’s, rhythm cycling has taken the world by storm. It is a convenient and weather-independent option for cycling enthusiasts or those looking for an effective and engaging way to exercise. As one of the most popular cardio workouts across the world, there is no denying how enjoyable and beneficial it is for you as a way to stay fit and healthy. In this article, we explore just what rhythm cycling is, what its benefits are, and where to go to enjoy rhythm cycling in Bangkok.

The History of Rhythm Cycling

Before it became a world-famous phenomenon, rhythm cycling first began as indoor cycling.  Also known as spinning or stationary cycling, it is a form of aerobic exercise performed on stationary bicycles. It was initially started by a South African cyclist named Jonathan Goldberg, who experienced a near-death incident training for the 3100-mile Race Across America one evening. With a desire to be able to go on long bike rides wherever and whenever he wanted without concern for his safety, he started carrying out his race preparation within his home on a stationary bike. His innovative new way of training quickly grew popular with his friends and neighbors. The trend of exercising indoors with a stationary bike caught on. In the following years, Jonathan Goldberg further improved his indoor training program by combining it with music, resulting in the birth of rhythm cycling.

What is Rhythm Cycling?

Dynamic and immersive, rhythm cycling is a form of indoor cycling that combines synchronized movements with music beats. By having participants pedal in rhythm to the beat, it creates a more engaging and entertaining workout experience. Since its popularization, rhythm cycling classes have become a widespread offering in fitness studios or gyms all over the world.

The Benefits of Rhythm Cycling

Improved Cardiovascular Health

As cycling is an aerobic activity that elevates your heart rate, it improves the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. Regular cycling strengthens the heart muscles, enhancing its ability to pump blood effectively throughout the body. By cycling regularly, you lower your risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.

Feeling of Community and Motivation

Rhythm cycling classes are often led by instructors who enthusiastically lead you through various cycling routines, simulating uphill climbs, sprints, and interval training. It is also taught in a group setting, which can help you form friendships with other cyclists as you all face a thrilling challenge together. It is the perfect alternative for individuals who lean towards a healthier lifestyle but still love to be social.

Getting A Full Body Workout

Rhythm cycling is a full-body exercise. It primarily targets the lower body muscles, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. More advanced levels of rhythm cycling even add an element of dance and coordination, incorporating upper body movements or choreographed sequences which targets a full-body experience.

Extremely Convenient Form of Exercise

For those who prefer their workouts to be done in solitude, rhythm cycling can also be done through virtual classes at home. As long as you have a stationary bike and speakers, you can partake in rhythm cycling. As cyclists improve, they can even adjust the resistance of their bike to personalize the intensity of their workout.

Boosting Your Mood

Cycling can trigger the release of endorphins, promoting a positive mood and reducing stress. Endorphins are also natural pain killers. They reduce the perception of pain in the brain, which reduces the feeling of anxiety and promotes a calming effect. This results in a sense of well-being and enjoyment.

Low Impact Exercise

Rhythm cycling is gentle on the joints. It involves smooth, circular pedal movements that aren’t harsh on your body. This makes it a suitable form of exercise for people with joint concerns or those who are recovering from injuries but love to get their heart rate up.

Helps With Weight Loss

Cardiovascular workouts are great at helping you burn calories. They elevate your heart rate and increase how much energy you're expending, which is key in fat loss. During an hour-long rhythm cycling class, you can burn anywhere from 500 calories to 800 calories depending on the intensity level of your workout.
